Povia, who performed the song "Vorrei Avere Il Becco" (Target), was the overall winner of the 56th edition of Italy's flagship Sanremo Festival, which ran from February 27 to March 4.

The artist, whose single "I Bambini Fanno Ooh" was a runaway local hit in 2005, also won the men's section.

Universal Music-signed Anna Tatangelo won the women's category, Warner Music act I Nomadi took out the group section and labelmate Riccardo Maffoni took out the new artists section.

Six acts sang in each of the men, women and groups sections, with 12 in the new artists category. TV viewers cast votes by telephone and text messaging.

Contestants were gradually eliminated by popular vote, with the two remaining artists in each category performing again on the final night.

Viewing figures for the festival show a decline. The festival's final night, which was broadcast live on Rai Uno state television, received an average audience share of 48%, its lowest figure ever.
