The U.K.'s trade body the British Phonographic Industry is to launch a week-long promotional event in Berlin under the banner "British Music Week." Held May 19-26, it is part of an industry effort to boost the profile of British music in Germany.

Local partners in the event include live promoter/venue Karrera Klub, Berlin's public service radio station Radio Eins, music retailer Dussman and Berlin's listings magazine Tip.

The line-up of acts that will perform in Berlin are yet to be announced. A BPI spokesperson declined to disclose the budget for the event.

In a statement, BPI chairman Peter Jamieson said the event "is designed to focus the attention of both the media and the public on the whole range of exciting music coming from the U.K."

In addition, the BPI will run a "masterclass" on the U.K. music industry and organize a networking event for representatives of the British and German record industries, in partnership with the British Embassy in Berlin.

"It is particularly pleasing to see follow-up to the successful Popkomm events we have held in the Embassy for the last two years," commented British ambassador to Germany Peter Torry in a statement.

The "British Music Week" in Berlin is part of a series of events and trade missions coordinated by the BPI. In May, the London-based trade body will lead a U.K. delegation at the MusExpo conference in L.A.
