Sony BMG Music Entertainment Australia last night (April 4) revealed details of a key project for its new film and TV production division.

The major’s new division, which launched in February, will construct a “reality TV”-type series around a four-member girl band, which performs under the working title Girl Band. The group’s development and recording sessions for its first album will be the basis of a TV series.

Speaking at the company’s retail and media conference in Sydney, Sony BMG Australasia chairman and CEO Denis Handlin told Billboard.Biz that the TV project and others are gathering steam. "A major TV network is looking at screening this early next year," Handlin says.

"We are also in discussions with a major free-to-air network in regard to a new format for a series which will have a heavy music involvement as well," he adds.

Among the new local signings showcased at the event were Girl Band, opera-pop crossover singer Kane Alexander, "Australian Idol" winner Emily Williams, singer songwriters Kate Miller Heidke and Amy Person.

The presentation was part of a four-day conference which brought in Sony BMG executives from the United States, the United Kingdom and New Zealand.
