HMV U.K. and Ireland has appointed long-time staffer Gary Rolfe to the vacant role as head of music. With immediate effect, Rolfe replaces Phil Penman, who resigned as head of music in February.

Rolfe joined the British market-leading music and entertainment merchant in June 1990 as jazz controller of the company's HMV Oxford Street outlet. In 1992, he was appointed assistant manager, lower ground floor, at its flagship Oxford Circus store.

"HMV is well placed to maximize the major opportunities that will be presented on music this year and with Gary driving the department forward, I am sure that he will make an immediate contribution in helping to realize these," comments HMV U.K. & Ireland product director Simon Peck.

Rolfe reports jointly to Peck, head of DVD & related products Ian Dawson, and head of games Tim Ellis.
