Event took place April 5 in Buenos Aires.

Rocker Andrés Calamaro was the big winner at Argentina's 8th annual Gardel Awards—the country's most prestigious awards event—taking home four honors, including album of the year for "El Regreso" (Dro East West) as well as the esteemed Gardel de Oro (Golden Gardel) award.

The Gardels, which are organized by local record industry chamber CAPIF, celebrate local artistry and are voted upon by an academy of experts. The awards took place April 5 in Buenos Aires' Gran Rex Theater and aired live on the Telefe channel.

Other top winners of the evening included tango group Café de los Maestros and singer/songwrtier León Gieco, both taking home two awards.

Café de los Maestros surprisingly won in the production of the year category, beating out better known contenders. One of its producers, Grammy winner Gustavo Santaolalla, had been honored two weeks earlier with the Gardel personality of the year award.

The Gardel Lifetime achievement award was given to sibling duo Pimpinela.
