Duo replace Roth.
It's official. CBS Radio and XM Satellite Radio have confirmed the return of Greg "Opie" Hughes and "Anthony" Cumia to CBS Radio, this time in morning drive on seven stations, beginning Wednesday.
As Billboard reported last Thursday (April 20), the duo replace David Lee Roth in New York, Dallas, Philadelphia, Boston, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and West Palm Beach. Roth was dismissed on Friday after less than four months as Howard Stern's replacement.
Under terms of the agreement, the seven CBS Radio stations will broadcast a three-hour version of the O&A show from 6 a.m.-9 a.m. ET weekday mornings from the studios of WFNY (92.3 Free FM) New York. At 9 a.m., when the seven CBS stations begin their midday programming, O&A will broadcast two more hours to air exclusively on XM, originating from XM's New York studio.
In Cleveland on WXRK, Rover Radio will continue in mornings with O&A airing from 3 p.m.-6 p.m.
"With the combination of XM and CBS Radio, we now have the best gig in the business. The O&A Show is going to be bigger and better than ever," Hughes said in a release.
"We'll now be able to reach millions of new fans and old fans with our new morning show on CBS while offering our loyal XM listeners an uncut show and two extra hours that will only be available on XM," Cumia added.
"Opie and Anthony have proven their determination to succeed in this business, and have a relationship with their audience that is second to none in the industry," said CBS Radio chairman/CEO Joel Hollander. "CBS Radio is well known for having among its portfolio some of the best brands in radio, and it's great to have O&A among that stable again. Loyal listeners of O&A have grown accustomed to a show that's real and entertaining. As we move forward, we do so with confidence that this new enterprise will continue in that same spirit."
"XM's agreement with CBS Radio is a big win for everyone," said XM president/CEO Hugh Panero. "Opie & Anthony will now reach millions of new listeners and will continue to entertain the more than 6.5 million XM subscribers who have made their exclusive show on XM one of our most popular. XM is committed to creating the best content in radio and today's announcement is an example of how we're able to leverage it in a variety of ways that help build our business."
In their first engagement with the company, Opie & Anthony aired in afternoons on then talk WNEW-FM New York and were simulcast on Infinity Broadcasting stations in Boston and Philadelphia. But CBS Radio predecessor Infinity "cancelled" their show in 2002 after the now infamous St Patrick's Cathedral sex scandal. The pair joined XM in 2004.
In addition to WFNY and WXRK, O&A's other CBS Free FM stations include KLLI Dallas, WYSP, Philadelphia, WBCN Boston, WRKZ Pittsburgh and WPBZ West Palm Beach.
