Aims to ensure compliance, payment for indies.
Digital distributor The Orchard and The Harry Fox Agency, Inc. (HFA) have entered a licensing arrangement for full, permanent digital downloads.
"We have a responsibility to our labels and also to composers and writers to ensure compliance and payment of publishing royalties. Orchard-distributed labels can now relax...knowing that their recordings are properly licensed, and that publishing royalties are accounted for and paid,” said Greg Scholl, chief executive of The Orchard in a statement.
“Proper licensing ensures that publishers and songwriters receive the recognition and payment they deserve, and we applaud The Orchard for their efforts to streamline this process,” said Lauren Apolito, VP of business development for HFA.
HFA represents 1.5 million songs from over 28,000 music publishers for mechanical licensing within the U.S. Under American Copyright Law, mechanical licenses are required for music to be distributed through online music services.
