French media holding company TF1 Group on Wednesday (June 28) launched a user-generated content service which it is positioning to compete with MySpace.

"We Are Talented" offers music and video files to be streamed and downloaded, if allowed so by their creator.

The service at www.wat.tv is entirely free, its business model relying 100% on advertising.

"WAT is a French alternative to MySpace, which is typically Anglo-Saxon," says editorial manager Stéphane Beillaud, who adds that the service fills a gap for 15-34 year-old demographic in France. It might be later extended to other countries, Beillaud adds.

Beillaud stresses that the platform will place an emphasis on editorial efforts to support signed or unsigned artists in development.

Executives at WAT say the service is considering giving artists the option to sell downloads directly to consumers.
