The Australian Independent Record Labels Assn. is mooting the possibility of launching two awards events to increase the profile of the indie sector.

Staging an Australian Independent Music Awards is on the cards, Stuart Watters, CEO of the Brisbane-based trade body, tells Billboard.biz.

AIR is also looking to hold an event later this year in Sydney to acknowledge those artists who made the greatest impact on the association's weekly charts over the past 12 months,

The charts, which in April secured the sponsorship of V Energy drinks, reach an estimated 275,000 consumers through 90 outlets, according to Watters. These outlets include music magazines, Web sites and college radio stations.

"We want to expand the profile of the charts in mainstream media, like radio and television," he says.

AIR has a total of 500 member labels and individuals, 350 of which are financial members. Watters estimates that the indie sector makes up 25% of the local recorded music market.
