Bebel leaves post after less than a year.
Michael Bebel is bolting his post as Mashboxx CEO less than a year into his tenure to take the top job at Ruckus, a digital entertainment service for colleges and universities.
Ruckus has also closed $13.7 million in a second round of venture capital funding from Battery Ventures, Eastward Capital, Pinnacle Ventures and Shelter Capital.
Ruckus offers access to music downloads, movies and viral videos. By the start of the Fall 2006 semester, more than 70 schools will offer the Ruckus service. Over the summer the company has added 15 new schools including UC Berkeley, University of Denver, Georgia Tech and University of Oklahoma.
Bebel, a digital music veteran who previously served stints as COO of Napster, as an executive at Universal Music Group (UMG) and Universal Studios, joined Mashboxx, a legal P2P venture from former Grokster chief Wayne Rosso, last September.
The service, which has been development for more than a year, is yet to launch. It recently announced a content licensing deal with EMI. It also has content pacts with Universal Music Group and Sony BMG.
