Tokyo-based mobile phone operator Vodafone K.K. said Wednesday (Sept. 13) that it is offering an iPod nano as a package with one of its handsets.

Starting today, the Sharp 705SH mobile phone will be sold together with the new 2-gigabyte iPod nano, which Apple unveiled on Wednesday. Vodafone says the price of the handset/iPod package will be up to retailers, although the new iPod nano sells for ¥17,800 ($151.28).

The move is seen as a way of encouraging Vodafone subscribers to stick with the carrier ahead of a regulatory change scheduled for Oct. 24 that will allow them to change carriers while keeping their numbers.

Vodafone K.K. was bought by Tokyo-based Internet service provider Softbank in March and will change its name to Softbank Mobile Corp. on Oct. 1.
