EMI Music France and French multimedia device manufacturer Archos have launched two limited-edition portable players pre-loaded with music and videos from British alternative rock act Depeche Mode.

The non-exclusive deal covers European countries and will last at least until Christmas. "We will see from there how we want to go further with this," Archos deputy general director Loïc Poirier tells Billboard.biz.

The players belong to the latest series of Generation 4 Archos devices, which rolled out in the beginning of October.

The Archos 604 will feature five hours of the Mute-signed band's video material, including footage from the "Touring The Angel" DVD, a full-length film of their live concerts from Milan last February. The player will also include a 15-minute documentary and 23 videos from across the band's career. It will be sold at €399 ($507), compared with the €379 ($481) retail price for the standard device.

The Archos 104 will come pre-loaded with Depeche Mode's "Greatest Hits Volume On." It will be sold for €179 ($227), compared with the €169 ($214) standard retail price.

"We showed Depeche Mode the device and the quality of the screen", EMI France deputy director/VP of strategy and development Morvan Boury says. "This represented a good opportunity for a band that is really into sound, image and innovation and that was releasing a DVD live."

Content is protected by Microsoft PlaysForSure. The material can be transferred to storage devices, but can only be read on the original device.

Poirier says that the products establish a bridge between content and electronic devices and help Archos sell in new retail outlets.

Archos forecasts sales of one million devices worldwide this year, of which France is expected to account for more than 250,000 units. Poirier declined to unveil initial shipments on the Depeche Mode pre-loaded devices.
