China's Ministry of Culture reported today (Dec. 11) that the Chinese government destroyed more that 37 million counterfeit audio and video discs in the latter half of 2006.

The discs were seized across China through government organized raids of factories and warehouses. Of the total, 7.5 million discs came from Guandong province while Shandong, Hubei, Henan, and Jiangxi provinces each accounted for over one million seized discs.

According to government reports, in the first nine months of the 2006 more than 740,000 shops engaged in the sale and production of illegal audio and video discs. Roughly 1.45 million Internet bars were visited by government inspectors, of which over 14,000 were ordered to rectify business practices; 3,189 companies and enterprises were ordered to close.
