Venezuelan superstar Ricardo Montaner will be honored with the Billboard Spirit of Hope Award at this year’s Billboard Latin Music Awards.

Montaner, a singer/songwriter known for his emotive vocals and well-crafted lyrics, receives the award for the humanitarian work he does through his foundation, La Ventana de los Cielos in Miami, and the organization Los Hijos del Sol in Venezuela.

The Spirit of Hope Award, created in memory of late Tejano singer Selena, is awarded to an artist for humanitarian and altruistic work that goes above and beyond artistic achievement. Montaner, one of Latin music’s top names, has also been a tireless advocate for disabled children for nearly two decades.

“This award has enormous transcendence at a personal level,” Montaner says. “But above all, it’s important for the foundation. Being able to reach out to people will help us achieve thousands of things.”

Aside from collaborating in numerous humanitarian efforts across the continent, Montaner’s La Ventana de los Cielos foundation, which is funded by Montaner and his wife, Marlene, provides therapy and services to children suffering from Down syndrome, cerebral palsy and autism.

Past recipients of the Spirit of Hope Award include Shakira, Mana, Ricky Martin, Los Tigres del Norte and Soraya. -- Leila Cobo
