More on the rumored Apple subscription music service. The major record labels are believed to be pressuring Apple to add a subscription service tier as part of the renegotiation process for licensing music to the iTunes store.

According to a Financial Times article, subscription is yet another item on the wish list, which also includes variable pricing and FairPlay interoperability. Labels have long asserted their interest in a monthly reoccurring revenue channel that a music subscription would provide, yet have been disappointed with the lackluster performance of those services in existence today.

The hope is that a subscription service from Apple would elevate the model to prime time, much like it did with podcasting. Steve Jobs in recent years has tempered his criticism of the subscription model, and is rumored to be working on a software system that would govern such a service.
