Clear Channel Radio is making available a series of mobile phone applications designed to give its local radio stations more options to interact with listeners.

The mobile phone initiative will allow users to send text messages into local studios, participate in various contest and promotions, receive alerts for when their favorite song is about to be played, make requests and dedications and view the last 10 songs played. Additional features include breaking news, traffic information, trivia games. By July users will have the option to customize their phones with station logos, DJ wallpaper and format-specific ringtones.

The service uses both text-messaging and mobile Web sites designed for each station. As such, it is not limited to any one wireless operator.

Clear Channel is rolling out the mobile service nationwide on a region-by-region basis, starting with New York, and expanding to Salt Lake City and St. Louis in the next two months. In all, the company estimates it will have 100 stations operational by the end of 2008.
