Barry Mallen, a partner with Manatt, Phelps & Phillips in Los Angeles, won a victory for the Beach Boys' Brian Wilson in May in a suit filed by Mike Love.

The suit involved a "covermount" compilation CD that a London newspaper distributed.

Love claimed that Wilson should have asked for permission before allowing the newspaper to distribute 2.6 million copies since Love co-wrote some of the songs. Through a series of motions, Mallen eventually got the case thrown out of court.

I write about the issues in my Legal Matters column in the June 2 issue of Billboard. Unfortunately, Mallen's name was misspelled in the column as Mellon. Mallen was the lead litigator for Wilson in the case.
