Influential hip-hop artist Rev Run, one-third of Run-DMC, will be honored as a BMI Icon at the 7th Annual Urban Awards on Sept. 7. The awards are to be held at The New York New York Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.

Icon awards are given to songwriters and artists who have had, "a unique and indelible influence on generations of music makers," according to BMI. The ceremony will feature a musical tribute in honor of Rev Run's contributions to urban music.

Run-DMC and Rev Run were among the most influential rap artists of the 1980s, setting the standard with albums like "Run-DMC," "King of Rock," "Raising Hell" and "Tougher Than Leather."

Past Icon Award winners include Al Green, Isaac Hayes, Charlie Wilson and Chuck Berry.
