Reports suggest that MySpace may announce an open application development platform similar to Facebook's at the Web 2.0 Conference in San Francisco next week.

According to the blog TechCrunch, several developers say the move -- rumored since June -- is imminent. Like Facebook, the MySpace platform would allow companies to create widgets that extend various types of services and functionality into the MySpace service, and sell their own ads around it.

Google may be not far behind. In early November, the company is expected to open its iGoogle gadget and other social applications to third parties as well.
