The National Music Publishers' Assn. will be awarding songwriters the first-ever gold and platinum certifications based on sales of their recorded compositions beginning this week in Nashville.

The awards program will be launched on Oct. 18 when a gold award will be presented to Chris DuBois for "Mud On the Tires" and platinum awards will be presented to Josh Kear and Chris Tompkins for "Before He Cheats."

The following week in Los Angeles, a platinum award will be presented on Oct. 22 to Daniel Powter for "Bad Day," while Lifetime Achievement Awards will go to Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller.

The NMPA Gold & Platinum Composition Awards Program was created in partnership with the RIAA to celebrate the contributions of songwriters and composers of singles that have been certified by the RIAA as gold and platinum.

"These extraordinary songwriters have made a significant contribution to the world of music, and it is an honor to recognize them," says David Israelite, NMPA president/CEO. "With the launch of the NMPA Gold & Platinum Composition Awards Program, we will have even more opportunity to honor the talents of our hardworking songwriters behind these top-selling singles."

The Nashville reception will take place at the Cabana restaurant. The Los Angeles reception will be held at the Four Seasons Hotel.
