Google's newly unveiled OpenSocial effort received a huge boost when MySpace announced its support of the initiative.

Other newly announced companies named to the initiative include Imeem, Oracle, Six Apart and more. MySpace is by far the largest, with more than 100 million members. The company has watched its market share slowly erode to a significant challenge by Facebook, which this spring opened its network to all third-party developers.

MySpace's move with OpenSocial allows it to similarly open its network, but to so in a standardized way, while Facebook remains largely proprietary.

Facebook has not yet indicated any plans to participate in the effort, although the company is expected to make some major announcements at an industry conference next week.
