Leading financier Simon Robey has been elected as the new chairman of the board of trustees of the Royal Opera House (ROH), with effect from September 2008.

Robey, who was appointed on Nov. 30, will take the baton from esteemed lawyer Dame Judith Mayhew Jonas, who held the London-based post since 2003.

Said Robey, "I am very proud of the ROH and all it accomplishes on the main stage, in its other spaces and in the wider world. I have great hopes for the future."

Simon Robey was born in London and educated at Oxford University, where he was a choral scholar. He is currently head of financial advisory company Morgan Stanley U.K. and chairman of global mergers and acquisitions. Since March 2004 he has been a member of the governing body of the Royal Academy of Music and a council member of Aldeburgh Music since October 2003.

Robey's formal involvement with the RHO began in 2004 when he became a member of the ROH Development Committee. He joined the board of trustees in July 2006. He is a member of the ROH's finance and audit committee and is also a board member of ROH subsidiary DVD production company Opus Arte.

On his appointment, Robey added, "I am particularly proud of the leadership the ROH is taking in the cultural Olympiad through its relationship with National Centre for Performing Arts in Beijing."
