The producers of "American Idol" have received permission from Sony/ATV Music Publishing for the show's contestants to perform songs from the John Lennon-Paul McCartney catalog.

While specifics of how the show will use the Lennon-McCartney songs is still up in the air, at this point McCartney is not scheduled to make an appearance on the program.

In previous seasons, "Idol" has done themed performance nights - including a Fab Four-free "British Invasion" in 2007.

A spokesperson with "American Idol" declined comment, but show executive producer Nigel Lythgoe mentioned the deal Thursday on the radio show of “Idol" host Ryan Seacrest.
