Sony BMG CEO Rolf Schmidt-Holtz expressed interest in a digital music subscription service to German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

It's not clear whether he's proposing a consumer-facing subscription service based exclusively on the Sony BMG catalog or more of a B2B service that would allow other digital services to access the entire catalog with a subscription fee.

"The simplest option would be a flat rate under which a monthly payment would provide access to our entire music catalogue for all digital players, including Apple's iPod," he said. "It is even possible that clients could conserve some songs indefinitely, that they would own them even after the subscription expired."

The confusing part, among many, is the use of the word "clients," which could mean "customers" as the article originally appeared in German. He added that mobile phone manufacturers may be involved as well. Again, it's unclear if that means mobile subscribers or the manufacturers themselves.
