Independent distributor Select-O-Hits continues to expand in the Latin music realm.
Last year, the Memphis-based company launched a Latin division, Selecto Latino, which has concentrated largely on regional Mexican music, distributing independent Regional Mexican labels like Serca and DBC.
The company has now added to its roster rock en español indie distributor VYJ2. The Ohio-based company is headed by Chris Stimson, who with marketing consultant Ric Fazekas, formerly headed indie distributor Verdad y Jusitica Label Group Inc., which functioned as a subdistributor of rock en espanol product.
The new VYJ2's catalog includes groups like Pastilla, Auditivo, Montecristo and Maldita Vecindad. The first releases to be distributed via Selecto will be new studio albums by Tribal and Montecristo, both slated to street Oct. 21.
"It's the first time we see Latin music valued as a core asset," said Stimson, speaking about Selecto's approach to the business.
In the last three months, Selecto Latino has also expanded into the urban Latin rap/hip-hop market with releases from Virus Music and the new South Park Mexican album, due in November. The distributor is also working on tropical music with Latin Street Records, whose roster includes Willy Torres and The NYC Salsa Project
