Mobile entertainment company Thumbplay said it will lay off an undisclosed number of employees as a preemptive measure against an expected "prolonged economic downturn."

The company just launched a full-track downloads service in the U.S., and says it expects 2009 to be a growth year, despite the layoffs. Silicon Alley Insider reports that the downsizing will affect 25% of Thumbplay's current 100 employees, but the company disputed that, saying it is "much lower."
