RealNetworks is planning to lay off over 7% of its workforce, or about 130 jobs, according to a post in the company's blog.

The cuts are called a cost-cutting measure taken in response to the current economic climate. The company did not define precisely which positions were facing the axe, but said all employees targeted will remain on staff and on the payroll through the end of the year.

The company also refuted claims that the New York offices of its Rhapsody music subscription joint venture with MTV is closing. However the Rhapsody unit will be affected by the layoffs.
