Mario Marrero, a composer, executive producer and pastor who worked in A&R at indie label Tropisounds, has died. He was 55. Marrero passed away from cancer at the University Hospital Medical Center in Broward County, Fla., on Wednesday, according to the label.

The Puerto Rico-born Marrero signed salsa artists Richie Ray & Bobby Cruz, Ismael Miranda and Domingo Quiñones to Tropisounds during his tenure. "And he made it look so easy," international A&R director Dennis Murcia said in a note to the staff of Tropisounds and its Colombian affiliate Codiscos. "Even with his illness, he kept working...in this world, he left an immense mark."
