Naxos has acquired the Ondine label from the Moskito Group, a television and commercial films production firm, and will begin distributing the Finnish label in North America on July 1.

According to the press release announcing the deal, Ondine will remain an independent unit within the Naxos group organization and its release policy will remain unaffected. The label will continue to pursue its mission to represent the very best of Finnish performing artists and composers combined with working with top level international artists and orchestras.

"I'm extremely excited that Naxos was keen to become our owner," said Ondine managing director Reijo Kiilunen, who founded the label in 1985. "Naxos shares our solid commitment to classical music.

"Ondine will benefit from [Naxos] extensive and professional international organization and distribution network as well as its highly advanced digital business model," Kiilunen added. "In addition, joining forces makes us the strongest classical player in the domestic Finnish market. All this made me realize, that from a number of interesting alternatives, Naxos was the best choice of owner in facing all the challenges within our business world."

"There is very little duplication in terms of repertoire and Ondine has a very clear identity which makes it a perfect fit," Naxos owner Klaus Heymann said. "Ondine will benefit from being distributed physically and digitally worldwide by our subsidiaries and qualified third-party distributors."

Naxos Sweden CEO Håkan Lagerqvist has been appointed chairman of Ondine. He said Ondine "is a very welcome addition to our bouquet of Nordic labels owned by Naxos, already including Proprius, Swedish Society and others." He added that the acquisition "is also a statement that we strongly believe in the future of high quality recorded classical music."

Ondine has expanded its recorded repertoire from chamber to orchestral music and opera. It has recorded music from the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Tapiola Sinfonietta. The label's roster also includes vocalists Karita Mattila, Soile Isokoski, Matti Salminen, Jorma Hynninen, and Juha Uusitalo, in addition to instrumentalists such as pianist Olli Mustonen, violinist Pekka Kuusisto, and clarinetist Kari Kriikku.
