The shortlist for Canada's Polaris Music Prize was announced today, with a broad selection of artists represented, including Newfoundland epic rockers Hey Rosetta! and Somalian-Canadian rapper K'Naan.

Other acts making the list include alt-country act Elliott Brood, Toronto noisemakers Fucked Up, and acoustic-based Great Lake Swimmers. Several acts are nominated for a second time, including Toronto new wave rockers Metric, Quebec's Malajube, past winner Patrick Watson, Nova Scotia singer Joel Plaskett, and avant-garde popster Chad VanGaalen.

The list of 10 acts that made the list were taken from a group of 40 acts that were selected by a jury of 182 music journalists, broadcasters and bloggers from across Canada. The winner will be selected by an 11-person jury at an invite-only gala in Toronto at the Masonic Temple on Sept. 21.

Previous Polaris winners are Toronto's Final Fantasy, Montréal's Patrick Watson in 2007 and Caribou in 2008.
