U.K. alt-rock band Editors will open new Academy Music Group (AMG) venue, the O2 Academy Birmingham, as part of the set-up for the release of its third studio set "In This Light And On This Evening."

The band will play the first show at AMG's O2 Academy Birmingham on Sept. 10 (Billboard.biz, June 5). Its new album is due Oct. 12 in the United Kingdom and Europe via Kitchenware Records, licensed to Sony Music in Britain and PIAS on the continent. A U.S. release date has not yet been confirmed.

To accompany the release of "In This Light" Editors will embark on a 15-date U.K. tour commencing Oct. 7 at Belfast St George's Market.

The album is the follow-up to the band's hit 2007 set "An End Has A Start", which went straight to No. 1 the Official U.K. Charts Co. (OCC) album list. According to its U.K. label Kitchenware Records, Editors have sold 1.5 million albums to date.

Recorded in London with producer Flood, "In This Light" sees the band pursue a more electronic direction, according to lead singer Tom Smith who said in a statement that the U.K. capital had also made a big impression on the record, both lyrically and musically.

"I actually think it's in every song," said London resident Smith about how the capital city had inspired him. "In the right time and place, in the right light and on the right evening, something you have seen 1,000 times before can still take your breath away."

The O2 Academy Birmingham replaces the city's previous 3,000-capacity O2 Academy (also owned by AMG) and follows a £5.5 million ($9 million) investment by the venue operator.

The new venue has an overall capacity of 3,859 and houses three venues -- the main 3,000-plus capacity auditorium, the 600-capacity O2 Academy 2 Birmingham and 250-capacity O2 Academy 3 Birmingham.
