Alt-rock band Florence and the Machine, rapper Tinchy Stryder and pop act La Roux have been named nominees in the 2009 best U.K. and Ireland new act category for the MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs).

Girl group the Saturdays and pop act Pixie Lott are also in contention. An MTV panel from the U.K., U.S. and Europe put the list together. A further 21 regional nominations across Europe were also unveiled.

Voting for the category is open at www.mtvema.com to Oct. 11, with the winner announced on Oct. 12. All regional winners will then battle to be crowned the best European act at the 2009 EMAs, held at the O2 World Arena in Berlin on Nov. 5. The show, sponsored by Sony Ericsson, will air live to more than 40 countries in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

"MTV International has long been committed to supporting European artists at a local country level," said Bruce Gillmer, executive producer and SVP, talent and music at MTV Networks International, in a statement. "The MTV Europe Music Awards' local categories not only give us and our viewers the opportunity to celebrate homegrown talent but the Best European Act will give the local artists with the most votes incomparable profile on the world-famous awards' stage."

Performers, hosts and guest presenters will be announced in the coming weeks.

MTV claims over a million votes were cast for the 11 categories in 2008's awards, which were held in Liverpool and featured host and performer Katy Perry alongside performers Beyonce, Pink, the Killers and Kanye West.
