RealNetworks acquired mobile technology firm Varia Mobile in an effort to beef up its cloud computing capabilities. The news was confirmed by PaidContent and first reported by TechFlash.

Varia's technology lets users sync content stored on a computer with their mobile phones by accessing an online database, rather than connect to the computer directly. The company previously worked with RealNetwork's Rhapsody music subscription division on the Ibiza Rhapsody device manufactured by Haier, which allowed for direct over-the-air connection to the Rhapsody service. RealNetworks did not provide any details of its exact plans for the company, nor were terms of the transaction disclosed.
