Slash is set to turn up the volume for MTV Australia as the first confirmed performer for the April 28 launch party of its new retro-themed channel MTV Classic.

MTV Classic replaces the retired VH1 brand, and begins transmission May 1 on the Foxtel and Austar pay-TV platforms. As previously reported, the live music event, which is set to take place at Melbourne's Palace Theatre and goes by the title 'MTV Classic: The Launch', will bump the five-year-old MTV Australia Awards from this year's calendar (Billboard.biz, Feb. 12).

Targeting the 25-40 demographic, MTV Classic will draw on the big hits and artists from the 1980s through to the 2000s. The station will complement MTV Networks Australia's existing music channels, MTV and The Music Factory (TMF), plus the network's kids' brands Nickelodeon and Nick Jnr.

Former Guns 'N Roses/Velvet Revolver guitarist Slash's self-titled debut solo album is set for release in Australia on April 2. According to the MTV Australia Web site, Slash will perform a selection of Guns N' Roses and solo tracks. Other artists due to perform at the launch event will be announced shortly.
