A good prediction in this Q&A with Thumbplay CEO Evan Schwartz on Apple’s entry into cloud music services: “When they launch they'll put a lot of marketing and a lot of money behind it and it'll educate all consumers about the value of cloud-based music, which is good for everybody who is in this business.” Same goes for Google. A cloud music service by either company will raise cloud music’s profile in a way that will benefit competitors.

The founders of geolocation app Foursquare have said the company owes some of its success to Twitter. Before Twitter, people may not have understood the value in a service that sends updates to a circle of online friends. After Twitter, the founders were able to describe Foursquare as being like Twitter but with locations. Similarly, an Apple foray into cloud music will provide a valuable introduction to cloud music that will benefit other companies.
