Apple’s Ping social network for music fans continues to get flack for not integrating with Facebook. But it’s taken a step towards openness today through a deal with Twitter.

Starting today, users can connect their Twitter and Ping accounts, allowing them to send and receive updates on Pin activity, song previews and links to buy and download music from iTunes through Twitter. Details on Twitter’s blog.

With 175 million registered users sending 95 million Tweets a day, Twitter is certainly a good partner for Apple help give the struggling Ping service some much-needed momentum. While it has attracted “millions” of users in the two months after launch, only 2,000 artists have gone through the vetting process to set up accounts, according to an e-mail Apple recently sent to registered users.

However, while a nice first step, Apple will have to sort out its differences with Facebook for it to become in any way relevant beyond the iTunes faithful.
