CANNES, France -- With the collapse of Comes With Music in most Western markets, it's fair game to question how well mobile music is doing in Europe. Lee Epting, the content services director for one of the continent's larger network operators -Vodafone -- reported 1 million paying subscribers for its paid download service.

Sounds like a start, but when you consider that Vodafone has more than 300 million voice subscribers in more than 30 countries, the excitement can quickly grow thin.

"Clearly, we're in a challenging market," Epting said.

But Vodafone is surviving where Comes With Music failed by adjusting to consumer demands. She said the biggest spike in subscriptions came after it dropped all DRM requirements.
