Decemberists fans were the most active Foursquare users in January, according to data at SuperGlued.com on New York check-ins on the social media app. Users of Foursquare appear to love indie rock and tend to frequent a small number of venues. But not many of them are Bryan Adams fans.

At three Decemberists shows at New York City's 2,894-capacity Beacon Theater in January, fans checked in on location-based social app Foursquare an average of about 106 times per night. A Sarah McLachlan show at the same venue, on the other hand, had only 22 check-ins. A Bryan Adams show at the Beacon had just ten.

The top concert for check-ins was Prince at Madison Square Garden with 178, according to SuperGlued. Three Decemberists shows had 88, 114 and 115 check-ins. A Broken Social Scene show at Terminal 5 (Foursquare's top music venue of 2010) had 103 and was one of four to break the century mark.

In terms venue capacity, the 39 check-ins at the Little Dragons show at the 550-capacity Music Hall of Williamsburg was tops for the month. Right behind was the 37 check-ins at the Vaccines' show at the 550-capacity Bowery Ballroom. The Little Dragons also got 35 check-ins at the Bowery.

Browse through the top shows and you may spot a few trends: indie rock fans like to use Fourquare and people really tend to check in at venues owned or operated by Bowery Presents. In addition to booking shows at Terminal 5 and the Bowery Ballroom, Bowery Presents books shows at Webster Hall (seen many times on the SuperGlued top shows) and the 250-capacity Mercury Lounge (also seen many times).

Some music fans either aren't using Foursquare or don't care to broadcast their whereabouts. A Keith Jarrett concert at the 2,804-capacity Carnagie Hall had as many check-ins -- 10 -- as Freelance Whales at the intimate In Vino Wine Bar. Matisyahu at Bowery Ballroom had 6 check-ins, the same number by David Berkeley at the tiny Rockwood Music Hall.

And classical fans are apparently not avid Foursquare users. The New York Philharmonic twice got just 5 check-ins at the 2,738-capacity Avery Fisher Hall.

For artists, labels and managers, these numbers are revealing. Marketing experts may encourage them to embrace all aspects of social media. They may feel they are lagging behind in using Foursquare. But it's clear from these numbers that Foursquare, like all new technologies, is currently used by just a subset of music fans. This technology has not dispersed into the mainstream.

On an interesting side note, the list shows the fat head/skinny tail distribution curve popularized by the book "The Long Tail" (see chart below). After The Decemberists' at 88 check-ins, which is #5 on the list, there is a large drop off to #6 at 44 check-ins. From there the distribution curve gently falls as the number of check-ins drops to the low single digits. Number 19 on the list is 22 check-ins, numbers 43 through 48 are 10 check-ins and numbers 110 through 116 are 6 check-ins. And that's out of thousands of concerts that occurred in January.
