As any good cook knows, the right ingredients just sell themselves -- and that's the philosophy behind June's App of the Month, Songkick Apps.
The initial selling point is simple: the app scans the music stored on any iPhone to which it's been downloaded, then creates a custom calendar of nearby upcoming concerts by any artists represented, using data collected from Songkick's database of 100,000 concert listings worldwide. Options past this are plenty. Users can scroll through the artists stored in their phone to note the ones who are touring, or opt to track only select artists if desired.
The app also supports the ability to search for showtimes in other cities, browse all concerts taking place in a given city (regardless if they're stored on the device) and set up various alerts for when new dates are added, or for when friends book plans to attend a concert. And best of all, users can link to buy tickets to any of the concerts mentioned.
Pending upgrades include alerts for when tickets are about to go on sale, but so far the lack of this feature hasn't had a downside -- in its first two weeks out, the app was downloaded more than 100,000 times. Songkick was already a hot startup before the app's launch. While not yet mainstream, it's apps like this that will help expand its brand even further.
