Jenni Rivera, Cristian Castro Both Have Top 10 Albums on Billboard Latin Chart; Romeo Santos Holds No. 1

Regional Mexican singer Jenni Rivera has renewed her contract with Universal Music Latin Entertainment/Fonovisa, UMLE president Victor Gonzalez tells Billboard.biz.

Rivera, known as the Diva of Banda Music, has become a top-selling name in the regional Mexican genre with a lucrative portfolio that includes touring, beauty products and a reality show on mun2.

"She works hard," Gonzalez says. "Her upcoming show at Staples Center is going to be a milestone for Jenni and I believe that her fans will be very pleased."

The Staples Center show on Sept. 3 will mark the first time a female regional Mexican artist performs at the large-scale venue.

In 2009, Rivera was already showing her solid reach when she sold out two nights at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles during the summer, grossing nearly $1 million with an attendance of more than 12,000, according to Billboard Boxscore.

Rivera, like her siblings and most notably her brother Lupillo Rivera, grew up working for her father Pedro Rivera's label, Cintas Acuadrio, founded in the mid-'80s. In an earlier Billboard interview Rivera spoke about learning the music business from the ground up through the family's patriarch.

"We accidentally turned into artists ourselves," Rivera said. "We've built up little by little. More than an artist, I'm a businesswoman."

To date, Rivera has sold more than 1 million albums in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Her last studio album, La Gran Señora, sold 112,000 units and reached No. 2 on the Top Latin Albums chart. She's earned five top 10 entries on the same chart.

For her next project, Rivera is releasing the first single, "Basta Ya" from her new album "Joyas Prestadas" on Aug. 29 with the album tentatively slated for Nov. 22. Two albums are scheduled to be released in two musical styles, pop and banda.
