Florence + the Machine's 'Ceremonials' Tops Coldplay, U.K. Album Charts

Florence & The Machine's sophomore set "Ceremonials" (Island Records/Universal) is set to knock Coldplay off the top of the U.K. album charts.

Released this week, "Ceremonials" has moved approximately 38,000 copies in its first two days of trading, according to the Official Charts Company (OCC). Having debuted at No. 1 Oct. 30 with first week sales of 208,000, Coldplay's "Mylo Xyloto" (Parlophone/EMI) has sold just over 23,000 copies in the same period. Professor Green's sophomore set "At Your Convenience" (Virgin/EMI) currently occupies third place in the U.K. album charts.

As previously reported, Coldplay's "Mylo Xyloto" set a new weekly digital album sales record selling 83,000 digital units in its first week. Many have attributed the record-breaking digital tally to the band's refusal to yet allow its album to appear on music streaming services. The previous record holders were British pop act Take That, who moved 79,800 first week downloads of its latest studio set "Progress," according to the OCC.

"The growth in popularity of digital albums has been evident throughout this year and Coldplay's impressive achievement in setting this new mark further emphasizes this explosion of interest. It surely won't be long before an album has surpassed 100,000 downloads in a week," commented OCC managing Director Martin Talbot in a statement.

In the U.K. singles chart, 2010 "X-Factor finalist" Cher Lloyd - who topped the charts with her debut single "Swagger Jagger" (Syco/Sony Music Entertainment) earlier this year - is vying with Brit rapper Professor Green for the top spot. Lloyd's "With Ur Love" featuring Mike Posner is currently ahead of Green's "Read All About It" featuring Emeli Sande, which debuted at No. 1 Oct. 30, but only by 1,000 units. Def Jam/Mercury's "We Found Love" by Rihanna featuring Calvin Harris is at No. 3, according to the OCC.
