Sony To Resurrect Relentless Records Label

Sony Music is to re-launch Relentless Records, the U.K.-based label which helped launch the careers of Joss Stone, Jay Sean and KT Tunstall.

Label co-founder and former Virgin Records U.K. President Shabs Jobanputra is to head the revived London-based label, which was founded in 1999 as an independent imprint and quickly achieved commercial success with British urban acts So Solid Crew, Artful Dodger and Craig David.

Working in conjunction with EMI, Relentless scored a huge worldwide smash with Joss Stone's 2003 debut "The Soul Sessions," which went on to sell over 3.5 million copies in the U.K., according to the label. Jay Sean, Scottish singer-songwriter KT Tunstall and Cage the Elephant are also among the artists who have released records under Relentless/EMI.

In 2009, the label was sold to Virgin Records U.K. with Jobanputra - who originally co-founded Relentless alongside Paul Franklyn - becoming president of the EMI-owned Virgin imprint. During his time as label head, Jobanputra signed deals with Swedish House Mafia, deadmau5, U.K. chart-topping rap artist Professor Green and 2012 Brit Awards Critics Choice winner Emeli Sande. While working for Virgin/EMI, Jobanputra also worked on album campaigns for EMI artists Katy Perry, Robbie Williams and 30 Seconds To Mars, among others. He left EMI in April last year.

Sony's re-launch of Relentless Records reunites Jobanputra with Sony Music U.K. chairman & CEO Nick Gatfield, who held the post of EMI president of new music for North America and the U.K./Ireland when Jobanputra headed Virgin U.K.

"Shabs has a tremendous track record of working with artists across multiple genres. He is a great addition to our A&R capability," said Gatfield in a statement. Commenting on the return of Relentless Records, Jobanputra said: "I'm very excited to bring Relentless Records to Sony Music."

"There are lot of great people here and I hope to learn lots as we begin the next chapter," he added in a statement. New signings to Relentless/Sony include British singer-songwriter Misty Miller and London-based urban/grime producer Rude Kid.
