Stones Throw Records Launches Subscription Service

Stones Throw Records is launching a digital subscription service, the Los Angeles indie label announced on Tuesday.

The artist-run indie label, founded by Peanut Butter Wolf in 1996, will offer customers high-quality, DRM-free MP3s of its future releases buffet-style for $10 a month.

The initial launch will include three releases, Homeboy Sandman's "Subject: Matter" EP, "The Minimal Wave Tapes Vol. 2," and M.E.D.'s "Classic Instrumentals" album. The label, which focuses on hip-hop and revivalist soul, is also home to artists such as Aloe Black, Madlib, Mayer Hawthorne and the Stepkids.

The service will run in partnership with Drip.fm, the platform created by electronic label Ghostly International to offer its own similar subscription service.

The new technology is a D.I.Y. response to the subscription model of industry players such as Spotify, whose all-you-can-eat offerings, while significantly broader, do not include ownership. (Both Stones Throw and Ghostly also make their material available to Spotify and other cloud services.)

"Aside from our long-running free podcast series, this is the first subscription service we've ever been able to offer," Stones Throw announced. "We've spent a few months in planning with Drip.fm, developed by our friends at Ghostly International. We think their service is a great one, and we're proud to work together."
