Much talked-about singer/songwriter Lana Del Rey makes her expected arrival at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 with "Born to Die," selling 77,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It's the highest entry for a female artist's full-length major-label debut since Jackie Evancho's "Dream With Me" bowed at No. 2 on July 2, 2011.
Meanwhile, Adele's "21" sits tight at No. 1 for a 19th nonconsecutive week (122,000; up 5%). Next week it could yield the top slot to the new Van Halen album "A Different Kind of Truth," which was released yesterday (Feb. 7).
At No. 3 this week is Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Leonard Cohen with the debut of "Old Ideas" (41,000). It's the icon's highest-charting album ever and best sales week since SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991. The beloved artist's new album is his first studio effort since 2004's "Dear Heather," which debuted and peaked at No. 131 (9,000 in its first week).
Thirty-five percent of Cohen's new album's sales came from physical albums sold via Internet retailers. To compare, only 1% of Del Rey's first-week physical CD sales came from Internet sellers. On the other hand, 74% of Del Rey's sales were downloads, while digital sales represented 30% for Cohen.
One more debut arrives in the top 10, from Fred Hammond, who starts at No. 8 with "God, Love & Romance" (26,000). It's the gospel artist's first top 10 on the Billboard 200, though he's notched seven No. 1s on the Gospel Albums chart (including this new set).
As for the rest of the top 10, the "2012 Grammy Nominees" album holds at No. 4 (34,000; down 35%), the "Kidz Bop 21" set moves 6-5 (30,000; down 9%), Drake's "Take Care" rises 9-6 (nearly 30,000; up 13%), and Tim McGraw's "Emotional Traffic" slides 2-7 (29,000; down 58%).
LMFAO's "Sorry for Party Rocking" returns to the top 10 -- jumping 18-9 (22,000; up 32%). The album was sale-priced at Walmart and iTunes last week, and the act also performed on the Super Bowl halftime show (Feb. 5). Lastly, Rihanna's "Talk That Talk" returns to the top 10 as well, zipping 16-10 with 22,000 (up 17%) -- a gain helped by a discount sale tag at Target.
Outside the top 10, Kelly Clarkson's "Stronger" surges 20-13 (21,000; up 26%) while Gotye's "Making Mirrors" moves 45-20 (18,000; up 99%). The former artist sang the national anthem before the Super Bowl, while the latter album was released in physical form last week. Until now, it had only been available digitally.
A bit farther down the list, Madonna's "Celebration" greatest-hits album re-enters at No. 24 with 16,000 sold (up 1,341%). The Super Bowl halftime headliner's album was sale-priced at iTunes last week for $6.99, while Amazon MP3 discounted it to $3.99 on Feb. 5.
Speaking of Madonna, on the Digital Songs chart, her new single "Give Me All Your Luvin'," featuring Nicki Minaj and M.I.A., debuts at No. 7 with 115,000 downloads sold. As the tracking week ended on Sunday, Feb. 5, this debut represents only the song's first three days of release. (It bowed on Friday, Feb. 3.) Comparably, Madonna's last lead single from a studio album, 2008's "4 Minutes," started with 217,000 downloads in its first week of availability. (It was released on a Monday.) Or, a little less than double what "Luvin'" sold in three days.
The aforementioned Clarkson is steady at No. 1 with "Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)," selling 237,000 (up 6%) while Adele's "Set Fire to the Rain" also stays put at No. 2 (165,000; down 2%). Nos. 3-6 are also in the same spots as last week: In order, we have David Guetta's "Turn Me On" (featuring Minaj) with 148,000 (down 9%), Tyga's "Rack City" with 139,000 (down 2%), Snoop Dogg & Wiz Khalifa's "Young, Wild & Free" with 127,000 (down 1%) and Flo Rida's "Good Feeling" with 115,000 (down 5%).
Gym Class Heroes' "Ass Back Home" (featuring Neon Hitch) jumps into the top 10 for the first time, climbing 14-8 with 113,000 (up 30%) while LMFAO's "Sexy and I Know It" falls one slot to No. 9 with 112,000 (down 1%).
The Glee Cast's rendition of Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal" (featuring 2Cellos) debuts at No. 10 with 108,000. It marks the cast's third-highest sales week for a single this season, following its Adele mash-up of "Rumour Has It"/"Someone Like You" (160,000 in its debut) and its cover of fun.'s "We Are Young" (137,000 in its debut).
Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending Feb. 5) totaled 5.8 million units, up 8% compared with the sum last week (5.4 million) and up 6% compared with the comparable sales week of 2011 (5.5 million). Year-to-date album sales stand at 27.2 million, up 3% compared with the same total at this point last year (26.3 million).
Digital track sales this past week totaled 26.4 million downloads, up 2% compared with last week (26 million) and up 7% stacked next to the comparable week of 2011 (24.6 million). Year-to-date track sales are at 141.6 million, up 6% compared with the same total at this point last year (132.9 million).
Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2011 when: the "Now 27" album entered at No. 1 with 151,000 and Mumford & Sons' "Sigh No More" skipped to its peak of No. 2 (rising nine slots) with 49,000 (up 99%). The previous week's No. 1, Nicki Minaj's "Pink Friday," fell to No. 4 with 47,000 (down 3%)
