The Billboard Music Awards returned to prime-time TV after a four-year hiatus in 2011 and received a massive reception from both music fans and industry alike. The show was the highest-rated program of the evening with the three-hour telecast averaging 7.9 million total viewers (even beating out the finale of NBC's "Celebrity Apprentice"). Additionally, over 220,000 Tweets about the show were shared during the course of the broadcast.

The show is back, airing on ABC at 8/7c this Sunday, May 20th, and social media is an integral part of the show this year. Make sure to join the conversation on Twitter throughout the weekend by using the official 2012 Billboard Music Awards event hashtag, #BBMA. Want the inside scoop on what else to expect? Read on…

On-air integration
Pay attention to the lower third of your screen during the award show to find out how to join the conversation on Twitter, and how to score a free song download during the show.

Shazam
Did you watch the Super Bowl during Madonna's halftime show? If you did, you may remember being able to tag the performance using Shazam to get a free download of Madonna's new single. We're bringing the same thing to the 2012 Billboard Music Awards, but you'll have to tune in to see whose track you'll be able to download.

Twitter

Make sure to check the @Billboard Twitter stream during the show to see which artists and celebrities are live-tweeting about the show from the comfort of their own couches, and check out their individual streams to see their Tweets throughout the night. A dedicated Twitter feed on Billboard.biz's awards hub will display all tweets with the #BBMA hashtag
