In the latest installment of This Week In Music, Topspin's Ian Rogers talks with Clear Channel's Julie Pilat about her start in the radio industry, programming radio and EDM artists.
Pilat speaks about her start in the FM radio industry, which began at age 14 because she was "just such a music fan." She has since made an impressive ride through Clear Channel, and now pop/hip-hop radio station KIIS FM and programs alternative station 98.7 in L.A. Pilat retains her status as a music fan, and says the two different stations she works at allows her to have "the best of both worlds."
She also stresses the importance of programming a station well, so as not to make listeners dislike one type of music. Pilat, who previously couldn't get into EDM music when listening to nothing but those artists, found a liking for it after listening to Clear Channel's Lollapalooza station. "Hearing Bassnectar in between Jack White and The Black Keys sounds a lot different than hearing Bassnectar into Skrillex into all these other EDM artists. So, I think a well programmed radio station really makes a difference," she says.
