Several WFNX Staffers Moving to New Online Station at Boston.com

WFNX fans will be pleased to know that several longtime on-air personalities will be moving to a new online station at Boston.com when Clear Channel completes their purchase of the Phoenix Media heritage alternative station later this summer.

Clear Channel Buys WFNX/Boston

Earlier today, the Web site, which is owned by the same company as the Boston Globe, announced plans to launch an online alternative station staffed with a number of former WFNX hosts including Henry Santoro, Julie Kramer and Adam 12 as well as former program director Paul Driscoll.

It's not unusual for broadcasters to "move" a station online when changing the format on a terrestrial signal, but quite often those efforts are simple music-only streams with no additional content. So far this effort appears to be different: The station is expected to feature alternative music along with band interviews, contests and other content. The company has already hired people to handle sales and operations further illustrating their commitment to the project.

Lisa DeSisto, general manager of Boston.com and chief advertising officer for The Boston Globe, says the company is constantly trying to generate great multimedia content for consumers.

"We've long thought radio would be a natural extension for us, and we're fortunate to launch with such an incredible team," she said in a statement. "Not only will the station provide a new and exciting feature for our users, but also offer new opportunities both online and offline for advertisers."

Christopher Mayer, publisher of The Boston Globe and president of the New England Media Group, added that, "Streaming radio on Boston.com is another way to deepen engagement with our audience by providing an exclusive, entertainment experience."

More details including a launch date and program schedule will be released later this summer.
