Exclusive: Larry Hernandez Signs With Universal Music Latin Entertainment/Fonovisa

Regional Mexican singer Larry Hernandez has signed on to continue making albums with Universal Music Latin Entertainment (UMLE), according to a spokesperson for the label.

Hernandez, who has had an ongoing relationship with UMLE for half a decade as some of his albums have been licensed through Discos Sol, has now signed directly with Universal/Fonovisa to record four new projects, according to UMLE president Victor Gonzalez.

"We're very happy that Larry Hernandez has signed with us," Gonzalez said. "We now have the unique opportunity to provide continuity to a brilliant career and we're proud to be able to participate in the consolidation in a career of one of the stars of the regional Mexican genre."

Hernandez has charted with three top five albums on the Regional Mexican Albums chart, including two No. 1s: "En Vivo Desde Culiacan" and "Larrymania." His most recent charting album was 2010's "20 Super Exitos: La Historia De Los Exitos," which hit No. 3 on the Regional Mexican chart. On the Regional Mexican Airplay chart, he's earned seven hits, with four of those hitting the top 10. He's recently wrapped a 23-week run on the chart with "Ya Me Canse," which peaked at No. 10 on the May 19 chart.

His biggest selling album in the U.S. is "16 Narco Corridos," with 97,000 sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Total album sales stand at 300,000.

In recent months Hernandez has been promoting his music and a new one-hour reality show with cable network mun2. "Larrymania," which premieres in the fall, will follow the crooner's career beyond the recording studio.

"I think the show is going to be something my fans will enjoy," Hernandez recently told Billboard.biz. "It's time for them to see who I am. I'm just like them, a guy with two kids. I'm just like everyone else."

Mun2 GM Diana Mogollon says that Hernandez's show is part of the network's mission to reach a bilingual and bicultural audience, which has already been illustrated with the reality program, "I Love Jenni," starring regional Mexican singer Jenni Rivera who in November signed a lucrative long-term, cross platform production deal with the network to continue her popular show.

"We're going to see Larry navigate through Mexico, Arizona and Los Angeles and really bring to life a lot of things we've never seen before," Mogollon said. "We'll see him with family, at his performances and we'll also see many other interesting things about his life in all those cities."

Rivera, who calls Hernandez a close friend, said that she's not surprised that he's expanding his music empire. "Larry is a very hard-working artist," Rivera said. "He's not satisfied with just having a good selling record. He wants more and he's very focused on his work. He takes his career seriously and I applaud him for that."
