Country superstar Kenny Chesney is taking a page out of the rock tour book used by Ozzfest and the Jagermeister Music Tour, among others, by looking locally to find opening acts for his "Poet's & Pirates 2008 Tour."

Dubbed the "Big Star Competition" and named for his 2003 hit "Big Star," the contest will seek out a deserving local band to open Chesney's show when it comes to their hometown. One grand prize winner will be given a tour bus for the final weekend of the tour and will open shows in Tulsa, Okla.; St. Louis and Indianapolis. That act will also receive $25,000 and the opportunity to audition for Sony BMG Nashville executives.

Stadium shows will feature a battle of bands the night before the actual concert. Arena and auditorium concerts will have battle of the bands a couple weeks out in a local club.

Chesney was Billboard's No. 4 overall touring artist for 2007 and ranked No. 1 among country acts. He grossed $71.2 million and sold 1.1 million tickets. Chesney's new single "Better As A Memory" scored a Hot Shot Debut at No. 47 on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart.

The Poets & Pirates Tour, sponsored by Corona Extra, kicks off April 18-19 at the Mohegan Sun Arena.
