Noted Nashville business manager Gary Smith died in a hunting accident Aug. 12 in a rural area of middle Tennessee.

Smith, the founder of Smith Wiles & Co. and Copyright Exchange, was 52. His wife, Sherri, and sons, Tyler and Tanner, survive him.

Dwight Wiles, Smith's business partner, stated, "Gary and I spent 15 years together building our businesses and he was smart, creative and caring. He will be missed by his family, staff, clients and of course by me. His absence will leave a gaping hole in the music community at large."

Gary Wayne Smith graduated from Cumberland County High School in Crossville, Tenn., in 1974. He then went on to Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville, Tenn., where he graduated in 1978. He then went on to receive his graduate degree from the Nashville School of Law in 1983.

He began his career in 1978 with a mid-sized accounting firm specializing in real estate and construction accounting. Thereafter, he moved to SunTrust Bank's trust tax department to gain tax and estate planning experience. Later, he joined a small local firm specializing in music and real estate and in 1987 formed the accounting firm of Smith Wiles & Co., PC.

In January 2005, Smith and his partner Wiles formed Copyright Exchange, LLC, which is believed to be the only company in the world devoted exclusively to facilitating the sale and transfer of musical compositions.

He was a member of the Tennessee society of Certified Public Accountants, Tennessee Bar Association, Country Music Association and the Academy of Country Music. He also devoted much of his time to protecting and enhancing the rights of songwriters through the Nashville Songwriters Association International.

His clients have included Alison Krauss, John Rich, Big Kenny Alphin, Naomi Judd, Darryl Worley, Kix Brooks, Alan Jackson, Kenny Rogers and Keith Anderson.

The visitation and memorial services will be held at Brentwood United Methodist Church in Brentwood, Tenn. Visitation will be held on Friday, Aug. 15 and the memorial service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 16.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Gary Smith Trust Fund, to benefit several local charities, at any Sun Trust Bank Branch or mailed to Gary Smith Trust C/O Diane Pearson, 1026 17th Avenue South, Nashville, Tennessee 37212.
